Neighbor: I Helped Cook Crack At Hudson Home

Chicago Tribune

By Jason Meisner

Reginald Jones used to perform odd jobs for the Hudson family at their Englewood neighborhood home, fixing cars, running errands, even walking the family dog, named Dreamgirl after the musical that won Jennifer Hudson an Oscar.

But under questioning Tuesday by attorneys for William Balfour, the 55-year-old handyman and former Hudson neighbor admitted he used much of the money he earned to buy cocaine from the singer’s brother and feed a daily habit.

Jones also told jurors he would occasionally help with the drug sales, manning the front door to greet customers seeking $10 bags of crack from Jason Hudson, who had been shot in the leg in a home invasion in Michigan a few years earlier and couldn’t get around well. He testified he once helped cook powder cocaine into about 21/2 ounces of crack in the Hudson family’s kitchen.

“That’s a lot of dime bags, wouldn’t you agree?” asked Balfour’s attorney, Assistant Public Defender Amy Thompson. Appearing flustered, Jones responded, “Yes.”

The testimony came in the seventh day of the trial of Balfour, 30, the former brother-in-law of Jennifer Hudson accused of gunning down her 29-year-old brother; mother Darnell Donerson, 57; and 7-year-old nephew Julian King on Oct. 24, 2008. Prosecutors allege Balfour was angry his wife, Julia Hudson, wanted a divorce and was seeing someone new.

Numerous witnesses, including Julia Hudson, have testified for the prosecution that Balfour made repeated threats to kill the entire family if she tried to leave him. The jury has also heard evidence Balfour stole the alleged murder weapon from Jason Hudson weeks before the killings and was seen brandishing it in the neighborhood.

But Balfour’s attorneys have offered jurors an alternate theory: that it was Jason Hudson’s connection to the violent drug world that led to the slayings. It’s a risky strategy that involves accusations against someone who has been killed. Still, they have sought to exploit the drug activity at every opportunity.

Testimony took a decidedly technical turn Tuesday as prosecutors called a series of forensic investigators who testified about testing dozens of pieces of evidence taken from Balfour’s car and the white SUV where Julian’s body was found a few days after the slayings.

Man Gets 60 years for Gunning Down ex-wife Outside Oak Brook Hotel

By: Dan Rozek
Source: Chicago Sun-Times

Jerry L. Hudson said he loved his ex-wife, but shot her to death in self-defense during a New Year’s Day confrontation outside an Oak Brook hotel.

A DuPage County judge ripped those claims Tuesday as he sentenced Hudson to 60 years in prison for methodically firing six bullets into Melissa Bridgewater after learning she was dating someone.

“They were fired from jealousy, vengeance, anger, hostility, contempt for her and a malignant desire to control her life,” Judge Daniel Guerin said as he imposed what amounts to a life sentence on the 51-year-old Bolingbrook man.

Man Gets 60 Years For Gunning Down Ex-wife Outside Oak Brook Hotel

Chicago Sun-Times

By Dan Rozek

A man who shot his unarmed ex-wife six times, then claimed the 2010 killing was self-defense, was sentenced Tuesday to 60 years in prison.

The sentenced imposed on 51-year-old Jerry Hudson by DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin will keep the Bolingbrook man behind bars until he is 109 years old.

Hudson was convicted earlier this year of murdering his former wife, 45-year-old Melissa Bridgewater, as she sat in her car outside an Oak Brook hotel on Jan. 1, 2010.

A jury in February rejected Hudson’s claim that he acted in self-defense when he shot his unarmed ex-wife six times.

Students Hid During Shooting at California School

USA Today

By Jorge Ortiz

Police said seven people were dead and three others injured after a gunman opened fire Monday at a small Korean Christian school.

Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said One Goh was in custody after surrendering an hour after the shooting at Oikos University.

Jordan said police recovered enough ballistics evidence to determine that a handgun was used in the rampage. He said 10 people were shot, seven fatally.

“It’s going to take us a few days to put the pieces together,” Jordan said. “We do not have a motive.”

Jordan said Goh is a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from South Korea and a resident of Oakland who is believed to be a former student at the university. He said Goh commandeered the car of one of the victims and drove to nearby Alameda, where he surrendered.

The police chief said Goh also called his father soon after the shooting and told him what happened, and the father called authorities.

Convicted Murderer Allegedly Killed Three Friends Over Jacket, Shot One Victim 33 Times in Woodlawn

MyFox Chicago

A convicted murderer who has been out of prison for four years killed three former buddies in a brutal shooting that left one of his victims riddled with 33 bullet wounds, prosecutors say.

Curtis Davis, 40, allegedly shot Terry Brown, 34, Michael Nowels, 33, and Julius Benford, 29, Tuesday night at Brown’s Woodlawn home .

All three victims have criminal records for drug offenses — and police recovered a large amount of cash from Brown’s home in the 6300 block of South Evans — but the victims’ families say the dispute that led to the murders was over something far more trivial: a FUBU brand men’s jacket.

Davis had given the jacket to Brown in exchange for several shirts and pairs of pants. But when Davis later demanded the jacket back, they fell out, leading to the shooting, Brown’s grandmother Barbara Brown said.

“It just shows you what life means to some people,” Brown’s grandmother added. “To shoot three people over a jacket.”

Davis, who was charged with three counts of murder and was denied bail by Judge James Brown Sunday, knocked on the door of Brown’s second floor apartment shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday, prosecutors say. When Benford answered the door, Davis shot all three men repeatedly, it’s alleged.

A fourth man inside the apartment grabbed a gun and fired back at Davis, but missed, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Terry Clancy said.

15-Year-Old Dead, Three Wounded In Washington Park Shooting

MyFoxChicago.com

A 15-year-old boy is dead and three other males were wounded when a gunman ran into a Washington Park area home and opened fire Monday night on the South Side, authorities said.

A source told FOX Chicago News the intended target of the shooting wasn’t at the location when it unfolded. The target is believed to be a 14-year-old brother of the teen who was killed.

Patricia Strange — the mother and grandmother of two of the survivors — said the four friends had just visited her daughter’s home less than a block away, and were coming to visit her when gunfire erupted inside the first-floor hallway in her four-story apartment building in the 300 block of East 53rd Street.

Witnesses told Strange a car pulled up, the gunman got out, opened the door to her building and then opened fire moments after the four friends stepped inside.

Trib Local Downers Grove

By: Brian Slodysko

A 70-year-old Downers Grove-area man is accused of shooting out the window of a car as a motorist who claimed to be stranded tried to flee, Darien police said Wednesday.

The man told police he “only wanted to scare” the driver, who said he ran out of gas and was waiting for a friend to help, Darien police said.

John C. Kavan was released from DuPage County Jail after posting 10 percent of $100,000 bail, according to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with one felony count of reckless discharge of a firearm, law enforcement officials said.

Police say Kavan, of the 500 block of Redondo Drive near Downers Grove, pulled alongside the motorist, who appeared to be stranded near Greenbriar Lane and Bailey Road in Darien about 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, and asked if he needed help.
