Blackhawks Rally Past Kings, Reach Cusp of Cup Final

Source: CBS Sports

When Bryan Bickell’s shot slipped out of Jonathan Quick‘s usually inescapable glove and trickled into the Los Angeles net early, the Chicago Blackhawks figured Game 4 might be their chance to snap the Kings’ daunting streak of home dominance.

When Marian Hossa‘s shot eluded Quick for the go-ahead goal two periods later, the Blackhawks knew they had cracked their foe’s star goalie and the formula for winning at Staples Center.

The Kings are teetering in the Western Conference finals — and Chicago needs only one more victory to topple the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Hossa scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, and the Blackhawks moved to the brink of the Stanley Cup Final with a 3-2 victory Thursday night, ending Los Angeles’ 15-game winning streak at home.

“They were playing so well at home, and to finally break that streak, we’re happy about it,” Hossa said. “We knew about it. We talked about it before the game. We were hoping to break it, and we got it.”

Corey Crawford made 19 saves, and Patrick Kane tapped in the tying goal as Chicago rallied from a second-period deficit to beat the Kings. Los Angeles hadn’t lost in its rink since March 23, including eight playoff games. Bickell had a goal and an assist for the top-seeded Blackhawks, who took a 3-1 series lead even without suspended defenseman Duncan Keith.

After losing Game 3 in listless fashion, the Blackhawks had a solution to every dilemma, from the Kings’ two early leads to the absence of Chicago’s ice-time leader and top defenseman.

“We knew our defense was going to step up, and they did,” Bickell said. “We had a good feeling coming in. We had a bitter taste from the last game. They had a big start, but we stuck with it and eventually got it back.”

Game 5 will be Saturday night in Chicago.

Defensemen Lead Blackhawks to 2-0 Series Lead

By: Mark Potash
Source: Sun Times

Brent Seabrook should just keep shooting.

‘‘Yeah,’’ teammate Patrick Kane said. ‘‘He’s got a hard shot. Anytime he gets pucks to the net, it’s going to create havoc, whether it’s a rebound or a goal like he had [Sunday night]. We’re always telling him to tee it up and let those bombs go because he puts his weight into it, and it’s a hard shot.’’

The 6-3, 220-pound Seabrook fired a slap shot from the right faceoff circle past Jonathan Quick with 51 seconds left in the first period to help ignite the Blackhawks’ 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals.

Seabrook’s goal was the latest contribution from a rejuvenated defensive corps that has played a key role in the Hawks’ rebound from a 3-1 series deficit to the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-0 lead over the Kings.

Seabrook’s OT Goal Sends Blackhawks to Conference Finals

By: Chris Kuc
Source: Tribune

The improbable comeback is complete and the Blackhawks’ season rumbles on.

Brent Seabrook’s goal in overtime gave the Hawks a stirring 2-1 victory over the Red Wings in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals Wednesday night at the United Center. It was the Hawks’ third consecutive triumph, making them the 21st team in NHL history to advance from a 3-1 series deficit.

The victory was a roller coaster of emotions for the Hawks after they took the lead only to see the Wings tie it and then had a goal waved off late in the third period. But Seabrook ultimately sent the Hawks’ bench — and the crowd of 22,103 — into a frenzy when he scored 3 minutes, 35 seconds into overtime.

“That was an emotional game,” captain Jonathan Toews said. “The guys poured everything out there. It’s an amazing feeling to win something like that. We know we’re only halfway to where we want to go but to win a series like that is huge for our confidence and huge for everyone in this room to believe in what we can do. That’s heck of a way to win a series.”

They won it when Seabrook rifled a wrist shot from the high slot that deflected off Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall and sailed past goaltender Jimmy Howard’s glove.

“I don’t know if I saw it go in to be honest,” Seabrook said. “I just heard the horn going and the boys jumping out. It was a pretty exhausting game, but I think I was more tired during the celebration with guys jumping and pushing me in the face and dragging me down. It’s exciting. You don’t get to do that too many times.”

Hawks 1 Game From Elimination After 2-0 loss

By Chris Kuc
Source Chicago Tribune

Jonathan Toews barked at officials from the penalty box, venting his frustration during an almost-surreal string of three penalties called against the Blackhawks captain in a span of 5 minutes, 34 seconds.

Toews’ discouraging night was indicative of the Hawks’ play — and their Western Conference semifinals performance as a whole — as they fell 2-0 to the Red Wings in Game 4 on Thursday at Joe Louis Arena. The loss put the Hawks in dire straits as they trail the best-of-seven series 3-1 with Game 5 Saturday night at the United Center.

“Emotions run high in some of these games,” Toews said afterward in a hushed Hawks dressing room. “My stick got a little loose there. I was playing hard. Sometimes that happens. It’s frustrating I had to go to the box three times in a row.”

Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard made Jakub Kindl’s second-period power-play goal with Toews in the penalty box — and Daniel Cleary’s empty-netter — hold up with a brilliant performance, outdueling Hawks netminder Corey Crawford. Howard made 28 saves to hand the Hawks their first shutout of the season and first three-game losing streak in 2013.

Blackhawks Strike First, Take Game 1 Against Red Wings

By: Tracey Myers
Source: Comcast

Faster skating, dictating the tempo more, firing a plethora of shots at the opposing goaltender: that is Chicago Blackhawks hockey. And it was more evident Wednesday night than in any other postseason game they’ve had thus far.

Patrick Sharp had a three-point night and Johnny Oduya scored the game-winner as the Blackhawks beat the Detroit Red Wings, 4-1, in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series. The Blackhawks struck first, shaking off the rust from a six-day layoff and upping the intensity and pace as the game continued.

In their first six postseason games, this one definitely stood out.

“I thought that was probably our best game of the postseason so far,” said goaltender Corey Crawford, who stopped 20 of 21 for the victory. “We had a lot of pressure, put lot of pucks on net and we were skating great. It was one of our better performances.”

It was hard to argue with the assessment. The Blackhawks preached throughout the first round that they lacked the right intensity and pace, and still hadn’t come close to playing their best. Save some sluggish moments in the first period, they were pretty darn close to that on Wednesday.

“Much better from our prior series, and what we were talking about in our team game was in place,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “We had some pace, had some speed and some zone time and everybody contributed. Obviously you get scoring chances, you can draw penalties, get second opportunities and you can tire them out. That’s easier said than done, but certainly you’re on an advantage if you get more zone time. The last series we didn’t get much. Let’s look forward to trying to get more.”

Depleted Bulls Simply Run Out of Gas, Down 3-1 in Series

By: David Haugh
Source: Tribune

By tipoff of the Bulls’ 88-65 blowout loss to the Heat on Monday night, it became clear the United Center crowd would begin the game as short-handed as the team it came to watch.

Due to either low interest or heavy traffic related to Monday’s rare rush-hour start at 6 p.m., nearly half of the 21,990 seats stayed empty. The loudest thing in the arena was Craig Sager’s jacket. Those who fought the congested Chicago roads and arrived late had to wonder if it was worth the hassle.

Tom Thibodeau probably wishes he had driven to the game too.

His Bulls responded to the must-win situation with as little intensity on the floor as there was electricity in the building. As flat and lifeless as the atmosphere, the Bulls quickly fell behind 11-2 after missing 11 of their first 12 shots and never recovered in what likely was their home farewell. It was anything but a fond one.

“I’m disappointed with how we played,” Joakim Noah said quietly. “But there’s still a lot of basketball left, and we’re not going to give up.”

Broadway Jo was in no position to guarantee anything else about Game 5 on Wednesday in Miami.

In a series in which the Bulls already established a franchise playoff low for the most lopsided loss, they set team playoff records for fewest points and poorest field-goal percentage (25.7 percent). Not since the 2004 Hornets has an NBA team shot worse in a playoff game.

Hawks Eliminate Wild, Move on to Face Detroit

Source: CBS Sports

Marian Hossa and the Chicago Blackhawks were well aware they’d been playoff underachievers since they captured the Stanley Cup in 2010.

Now, they’re eyeing another championship. And they just took an important step toward it.

Hossa scored twice to back a strong effort by goalie Corey Crawford, and Chicago beat the Minnesota Wild 5-1 Thursday night to win the first-round playoff series 4-1.

The Blackhawks will face either San Jose or Detroit, if the Red Wings get past Anaheim, in the next round.

“We knew we hadn’t done it in two years,” Hossa said. “Minnesota, they still have a great team and are missing some players. We found a way. Now we get ready for the next round.”

The way the Blackhawks have dominated, anything less than a trip to the Stanley Cup finals would be a disappointment for them.

They got off to a record start and captured the Presidents’ Trophy for finishing with more points than any other team. Now, they’re eyeing the biggest prize of all. And after bowing out in the first round the past two years, they sure are looking good.

Even so, coach Joel Quenneville insisted they need to step it up a notch.

“It’s not the regular season,” he said. “There’s another appetite that we’ve got to get as well. I don’t think we should be happy where we’re at with our play. Let’s get angry as we go along here.”

Blackhawks take 3-1 Lead on Depleted Wild

Source: Associated Press

The Chicago Blackhawks were beaten the last game in the corners, along the boards and by an overtime goal for the Minnesota Wild.

By hurling their bodies in front of puck after puck on Tuesday, the Blackhawks stopped the Wild’s momentum right where it started.

Patrick Sharp scored two goals and the Blackhawks ratcheted up their defense to put the Wild on the brink of elimination with a 3-0 victory.

“It’s just been a calm, collected confidence we’ve had all year. I think we definitely showed that tonight,” said goalie Corey Crawford, who made 25 saves for his second career playoff shutout. “So many power play situations for them, and we just kept our cool. We didn’t freak out on the refs or lose it on each other. We just stuck with it.”
