This year’s pieces are as follows: My Rescue by Martha Cares of Sawyer, Mich.; Starts on the Wind by Richard Taylor of Milwaukee; Mr. Eggwards by Kimber Fiebeger of Minneapolis; Padre Pio by Titus Tomescu of Chicago; Leo and Sympatico (Chelsea & Kaitlyn), both by Pokey Park of Tucson, Ariz. The sculptures are along the walking path in Mount St. Mary Park.

Kane County State’s Attorney Puts Diversion Information up Front

By: Harry Hitzeman
Source: Daily Herald

Kane County prosecutors want to make sure first-time offenders get the information they need for a possible second chance.

The state’s attorney’s office recently consolidated all the information about the county’s five pretrial diversion programs on its website.

Known by many as “second chance” programs, these are opportunities for first-time nonviolent offenders to enter into a program in which they admit their crimes, stay out of trouble for a year or more and have the chance to keep their record clear of a conviction.

State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said that in recent months some defendants have asked to apply to diversion programs after litigating their cases for months and months or on the eve of trial.

Such requests typically are turned down.

“Part of diversion is acceptance of responsibility early on,” McMahon said.

How Kane County Flood Victims Can Get Property Tax Breaks

By: James Fuller
Source: Daily Herald

Kane County residents who experienced significant flood damage might be in line for a tax break as they try to rebuild. But those breaks won’t ease those homeowners’ tax bill pain this week despite their property’s loss of value.

The first thing property owners can do to mitigate some of their losses is apply for a reassessment of their home. Flood damage can result in a major change in assessed value if property owners can prove the damage was caused by the recent flooding.

A drop in assessed value would then apply to the taxes the property owner would pay in 2014 — not, unfortunately, to the bills that are coming in the mail this week.

“Everything that would be changed would be for the taxable year in which the disaster takes place,” Kane County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong said. “In Illinois we pay the tax bill one year after the assessments. So nothing positive that happens from this can in any way impact the bill that is going to go out this week.”

Slain Aurora teen hit with hammer, reports show

Reported by Harry Hitzeman, Daily Herald

Not long before she was to start her shift as a waitress on Jan. 31, Aurora detectives claim, Abigail Villalpando met with two male friends to hang out at a home on the 400 block of Jefferson Street on the city’s east side.

One of the companions, Juan Garnica, asked the 18-year-old West Aurora High School senior to look at a dead turtle in the home’s aquarium.

As she bent down and peered into the tank, Garnica hit her in the head with a hammer seven times, the detectives say. He then rolled up her body in a blanket, storing it in a blue container in the rafters of his friend’s garage, they say.
