Badminton State Finals: T.F. South Win Title

By: Steve Reaven
Source: Tribune

There was no shortage of tears among the T.F. South girls badminton contingent in wake of its convincing team state title victory Saturday at Eastern Illinois University.

The unbeaten Rebels began the weekend expecting to take home the school’s first team state championship since a girls bowling crown in 1990.

Realizing their goal proved more emotionally draining than challenging on the court as T.F. South’s 16.5 points were well ahead of runners-up Fremd and Naperville Central (12 points each). Reavis and Downers Grove North tied for fourth with 11 points.

Tears of joy also mixed with sorrow and anguish, however, during the meet’s final hour when both the tandem of Shannon Pollard and Jenna Pasko dropped a three-game decision 21-13, 20-22, 18-21 to Reavis’ Denna Zayed and Marissa Mangala in the doubles final, and junior Jessica Gomez forfeited after suffering a left knee injury during the third-place singles match.

“We won state, so overall I’m happy,” Gomez said. “At first (after being injured), I was sad. But now I see the positive side of it.”

Lyons sophomore Stephanie Lin was shocked after her 16-21, 21-16, 21-17 victory against Hinsdale South senior Emma Adcock in the singles final.

Hinsdale Central Principal Leaving for Iowa

By: Joseph Ruzich
Source: Tribune

Hinsdale Central High School Principal Michael McGrory won’t be returning to the west suburban school next fall.

McGrory confirmed last week he would be taking a new job that will be closer to his family in Iowa.

“It was a tough decision,” McGrory said. “I will miss a lot of people. We have great educators, talented students and supportive parents. That combination makes for a positive learning environment at Hinsdale Central.”

McGrory has been the principal at the school for three years. He said his daughter, Olivia, also attended Hinsdale Central and is graduating this year with plans to go to the University of Iowa. His three other children live in Iowa and the Kansas City area.

“My wife and I just decided it was important for us to be close to our family,” McGrory said. “We really like the Chicago area, and it was a great experience for my daughter.”

Failed Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills Police Consolidation Could Mean Layoffs

By: Danny Ciamprone
Source: My Suburban Life

Negotiations to consolidate the Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale police departments recently came to an end as Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom expressed his discouragement.

Bloom thought both Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale were going into consolidation at the perfect time — doing it without any layoffs and having proper funding before talks fell through.

“I’m not sure if we’re ever going to have this opportunity again and I think that consolidation is where we’ll be eventually, but I’m not sure we’re going to have the opportunity to have the funding and to have the time to be able to do it without layoffs sometime in the future,” Bloom said.

The main hurdle facing consolidation negotiations was Social Security benefits received by Clarendon Hills police officers, but not Hinsdale officers. Bloom said he knew of the issue at the start of negotiations, but didn’t see it as the pitfall.

Hinsdale Police Set for St. Patty’s Weekend Crackdown

By: Charles Menchaca
Source: Hinsdale Patch

Hinsdale police plans to be out in force to make sure everyone has a safe St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

Expect to see more Hinsdale officers between March 14 and March 17, as they look for late-night impaired drivers and safety belt violators. The effort underscores the disproportionate number of traffic deaths occurring during late-night hours.

The midnight to 3 a.m. timeframe is the deadliest time on Illinois roads, according to data from the Illinois Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Not coincidentally, the data also shows this time of day has the highest percentage of alcohol involvement and the lowest occupant restraint use.

District 181 Board Approves Advanced Learning Plan

By: Chuck Fueldman
Source: The Doings Hinsdale

An Advanced Learning Plan has been approved in District 181.

“It’s about every child in every classroom having the opportunity to be challenged and learn at a level that is appropriate for them,” said Kurt Schneider, assistant superintendent for pupil services.

The plan increases the academic rigor for all District 181 students, something administrators say provides a head start in meeting requirements of new academic standards that go into effect in Illinois for the 2014-15 school year.

But the 6-0 vote by the Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Elementary District 181 Board did not come without concerns, specifically from board members Brendan Heneghan and Yvonne Mayer who urged more discussion because there is confusion among parents on what it means for each student.

Tighter bond conditions for a Glen Ellyn man

Reported by Josh Stockinger, Daily Herald

A DuPage County judge set tighter bond conditions for a Glen Ellyn man Friday after neighbors unnerved by the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., raised concerns about his growing arrest record and unusual behavior.

Christopher Shukin has been arrested 10 times since November 2011 on a variety of charges, from walking around naked to window peeping and grabbing a 4-year-old child he didn’t know.

In court Friday, Judge John Kinsella ordered Shukin fit with a GPS monitoring device while under psychiatric care at a Naperville hospital. Kinsella said he would issue an arrest warrant if Shukin leaves the facility, which he checked into Thursday.

Prosecutors plan to argue at a hearing Monday that Shukin should be taken into custody, in light of his repeated arrests and a community outcry.

Dan Patrick Returns to Chicago Radio

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

Media Contact:

(708) 320-1530

matt@WCKGChicago.com

Elmhurst, Illinois- Superstar sports personality Dan Patrick returns to Chicago radio as the new morning host at 1530 WCKG.  The Dan Patrick show airs live from 8am to 11am immediately following Chicago’s Mancow Muller on AM 1530.

The addition of Dan Patrick puts suburban WCKG in the unique position of having two of its radio stars simulcast on television in Chicago.

WCKG used to carry the syndicated Michael Savage show, that is, until Savage literally abandoned his 300+ affiliates (AM 1530 included) last September.  It was a move that irked WCKG General Manager Matt Dubiel, to say the least, and inspired him to post an open letter to Michael Savage on the WCKG website (www.1530WCKG.com).

Dubiel explains WCKG has a clear purpose, “AM 1530 WCKG is a suburban radio outlet super serving DuPage County.  We are working to make WCKG the single best option for local businesses who need to reach the over 3 million people under the coverage area of AM 1530, from Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Rosemont, Elmhurst and beyond.  WCKG will broadcast the BEST content available for our Suburban listeners.  Dan Patrick and Mancow are radio stars who are going to help us shine our radio spotlight on the Suburbs.”

Mancow Muller’s show is geared toward pop culture, nearly absent of sports, while Dan Patrick’s show is sports centric (formerly aired on ESPN’s WMVP AM 1000).  It should be noted WCKG has made a commitment to Chicago sports since their relaunch in October of 2011, with twice hourly Chicago sports updates delivered by WCKG Sports Director Johnny Von.

Expect more from Johnny Von on WCKG.  Von is no stranger to the Chicago radio scene.  He was the overnight talk host on 97.9 (WLUP) during their FM Talk era, and well as a former WLS on air personality.  Perhaps more importantly, he’s a suburban native who ensconced in DuPage County.

Dubiel won’t tip his hand about all the upcoming additions to WCKG, but he has no problem sharing his excitement and enthusiasm about the bright future he expects for the station.  “It’s time to bring fun community radio back!  Corporate radio is going to get more divisive, political while catering to big box agency advertisers, while WCKG will get granular and grass roots…”

About WCKG AM 1530

In 2012, WCKG moved to AM 1530 under General Manager Matt Dubiel.  AM 1530 is a daytime AM radio station licensed to Elmhurst, IL.  Much like the original WSCR, WCKG broadcasts from sunrise to sunset.  On October 3, 2011, WCKG added Chicago radio personality Mancow Muller to morning and afternoon drive, with bombastic political talker Michael Savage in mid days.  On November 6, 2012, as America was re-electing President Obama, WCKG began airing the Dan Patrick show live from 8a-11am (weekdays).

The WCKG call letters have been part of the Chicago media landscape since February of 1985. While the Bears were in the Superbowl hunt, the Bulls were winning NBA Championships, the White Sox cinching a World Series victory, and the Cubs filling seats at Wrigley, WCKG was boasting superstar radio talent the likes of Steve Dahl, Howard Stern, Jonathon Brandmeier, Kevin Matthews, Penn Jillette, Garry Meier, Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck, Adam Carolla, Dr. Drew Pinski, and more.  That tradition continues in 2013 and beyond, with Mancow Muller, Dan Patrick, and Johnny Von, on AM 1530 WCKG.
