Family and friends are mourning a Downers Grove teen who was struck and killed by lightning Thursday, just days before she was set to graduate from Benet Academy in Lisle.

The DuPage County coroner’s office said Jennie Dizon, 17, was found unresponsive about 5:20 p.m. Thursday at O’Brien Park along Dunham Road south of 68th Street, in Downers Grove, just a few blocks from her home.

A statement released from the coroner’s office said a preliminary exam indicates Dizon died from “electrocution consistent with a lightning strike.”

By: Scott Schmid

Having already put together a solid campaign, the Glenbard North baseball team ended the regular season on a high note with a pair of impressive nonconference wins.

Glenbard North beat York 7-5 on Monday, two days after a 13-3 rout over Downers Grove North.

“Both are good teams,” said Glenbard North coach Rich Smelko, whose team was scheduled to open the playoffs Thursday against South Elgin. “Our hitting picked up which definitely helped.”

Luke Greenberg pitched six innings to record the win against York while Brandon Kressner, Ryan Storto, Brett Consitt and Jeff LaPage all had multiple hits.

Against Downers Grove North, Matt Frawley made his return to the mound after about a two-week absence due to an issue with his arm. The senior worked three innings.

Proposed Senior Living Facility Could Finally Fill Need in Downers Grove, but Neighbors Uneasy

By: Ed McMenamin
Source: My Suburban Life

Developers proposing a supportive-living facility at 4200 Lacey Road took input from neighbors concerned with the possible traffic congestion and aesthetic impact of the project at an informal meeting Thursday night.

Delta Development of Downers Grove would like to build the 120-unit facility for seniors on a wooded lot on Lacey Road facing residential streets. The project has not yet gone to the village’s planning commission, where it would have to be approved before going up for a vote at the Downers Grove Village Council.

Much of the discussion from residents focused not on the proposed project, but on years of frustration with Donegal Excavating, a construction company that sits next door to the wooded lot.

The construction company operates on a residential zoned lot, and many neighbors say large diesel trucks and other construction equipment rumbles in and out of the property late at night, despite their complaints to the village.

Some neighbors said combining vehicles from Delta’s facility with Donegal’s trucks could make a bad situation worse.

“I’m for (the development) … but I don’t want to see more cars, more traffic, especially with Donegal,” said Lacey Road resident Nick Janowitz.

Delta’s attorney Michael Fiandaca said the facility could push Donegal to operate in a more neighborhood-friendly manner, because the facility’s state license comes with quality-of-life standards that could give it leverage to pressure the construction company.

Downers Grove Library Takes Step Forward in Renovations

By: Rick Ashton
Source: My Suburban Life

I am happy to report a major step forward in the Downers Grove Public Library’s response to community needs.

A talented Chicago firm, Product Architecture + Design, is hard at work on plans for interior renovation of the library building.

Since the move into its present expanded and renovated building at 1050 Curtiss St. in 1999, the library has received millions of visits and checked out many millions of items to readers, listeners and viewers.

The well-loved building is now looking a little tired. Walls, floors, furnishings and restrooms need a makeover. Space for computer users is scarce. Expectations for convenience and service have evolved. Students, community groups and business people need places to meet, work and collaborate.

Group Organizes Protest in Downers Grove Against Same-Sex Marriage Bill

By: Amanda Luevano
Source: Downers Grove Patch

A conservative non-profit group is organizing a protest in Downers Grove against a same-sex marriage bill awaiting consideration by the Illinois House of Representatives.

The Illinois Family Institute—a group dedicated to “upholding and re-affirming marriage, family, life and liberty” through Judeo-Christian teachings and traditions—said on its website Monday that its members will hold a “Defend Marriage” rally at 11 a.m. Saturday in front of State Rep. Ron Sandack’s office, located at 633 Rogers St. in Downers Grove.

The group opposes Senate Bill 10—the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act—which was passed by the Illinois Senate in February and is awaiting a vote by the House. In addition to allowing same-sex couples to enter into civil marriages, the legislation would protect churches and religious groups from being required to perform or recognize those unions.
