Panthers Cap Regular Season With Two Impressive Wins

Having already put together a solid campaign, the Glenbard North baseball team ended the regular season on a high note with a pair of impressive nonconference wins.

Glenbard North beat York 7-5 on Monday, two days after a 13-3 rout over Downers Grove North.

“Both are good teams,” said Glenbard North coach Rich Smelko, whose team was scheduled to open the playoffs Thursday against South Elgin. “Our hitting picked up which definitely helped.”

Luke Greenberg pitched six innings to record the win against York while Brandon Kressner, Ryan Storto, Brett Consitt and Jeff LaPage all had multiple hits.

Against Downers Grove North, Matt Frawley made his return to the mound after about a two-week absence due to an issue with his arm. The senior worked three innings.

Downers Grove North Preaching Steadiness

By: Phil English
Source: Tribune

Chad Isaacson returns to a common theme when discussing the players on his Downers Grove North baseball team — steadiness.

Steadiness is what it takes to survive in the often tough West Suburban Silver. And it helps a team stay toward the top of the conference, even when it’s not playing its best baseball.

“These guys are in the right frame of mind,” Isaacson said. “We went through a little bit of a lull here recently, with losses to Oak Park and Downers Grove South. But these guys know how to dust off and get back to work. They’ve consistently showed resiliency.

“And we’re competing every single day and doing the little things. We’re not always flashy. And to be honest, we’ve had years where guys have had bigger arms, but our guys know you have to play pitch to pitch, inning to inning. And it all goes back to leadership.”

The Trojans were 18-8 overall and 11-5 in the Silver heading into the final week of the regular season. They’ve done it without a significant amount of power hitting or a dominating pitcher.

Under the lights, both pitchers were lights out.

With the win, Westmont (20-4 overall) moved past Lisle (14-7-1) for first place in the Interstate Eight North division standings. The Sentinels improved to 11-2 in conference and the Lions slipped to 9-3-1.

Aurora Central Overcomes Slow Start

By: Paul Johnson
Source: Sun-Times

First-year Aurora Central Catholic baseball coach Sean Bieterman has stressed all season that this year’s version of the Chargers is a new and improved group.

The Chargers proved it yet again Wednesday with an 8-4 Suburban Christian Conference win over St. Francis, a team that has routinely had ACC’s number in the past.

ACC ace Matt Miller worked through some early errors to pitch another gem and the offense exploded with a six-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. ACC improves to 22-3 overall and 10-2 in the Suburban Christian Gold, tied with Chicago Christian for the top spot.

“This is a different group of guys,” Bieterman said. “That’s a credit to the kids and the assistant coaches for how hard they work and how focused they keep the kids every inning. When you’re winning baseball games, you find a way to keep winning baseball games.”

Worried Parents Force Cancellation of Payton-Brooks Baseball Game

By: Mike Clark
Source: Sun-Times

A baseball game between two Chicago public high schools was canceled Saturday when some parents from a North Side school refused to let their children travel to the South Side for the game, saying they were worried about the safety of their kids.

The game between Payton College Prep and Brooks College Prep was supposed to start at 7 p.m. The Payton team had played a makeup game earlier Saturday against Von Steuben and was to head to Roseland on the city’s South Side to play Brooks.

Instead, according to Payton head coach William Wittleder, “About three, four parents [came] up to me saying they’re not letting their kids go down there.”

Area Baseball And Softball Teams Looking For State Titles

TribLocal

By Jeff Vorva

Since the Illinois High School Association expanded the boys baseball and girls softball playoffs from two to four classes in 2008, the TribLocal area has seen some mixed results.

In baseball, the area produced seven champions in those four years. Prairie Ridge won the first Class 4A title in 2008, Joliet Catholic Academy (3A) and New Trier (4A) were the best in 2009, Elgin’s Westminster Academy (1A) and Naperville Central (4A) won titles in 2010 and Kaneland (3A) and Lyons Township (4A) won titles last year.

But in softball, there were just three champs – all in Class 4A – and the area was shut out last year. Lincoln-Way Central won the first Class 4A title in 2008 followed by Loyola Academy in 2009 and Sandburg in 2010.

Pairings and seedings have been announced for both sports for this season and several area teams picked up high regional and sectional seeds. Class 1A and 2A games start May 14 with the state championship games June 2. Class 3A and 4A games start May 21 with the state title games June 9.

At the McHenry Sectional, Crystal Lake South and Cary-Grove were the local team to pick up a top regional seeds. At the Schaumburg Sectional, Geneva, St. Charles North, St. Charles East and Wheaton North picked up the top four seeds.

At the Evanston Sectional, Maine South, Oak Park River Forest, New Trier and Niles West picked up the top four seeds while at the Glenbrook South Sectional, Mundelein, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South and Hersey earned the top spots.

At the Andrew Sectional, 2011 runner-up Providence Catholic picked up the first seed followed by Lincoln-Way North, Sandburg and Marist. At the St. Ignatius Sectional, defending champ Lyons Township drew the fifth seed and would have to beat out a field that includes St. Laurence (ranked No. 1 in the area by the Tribune recently), Mt. Carmel (ranked No, 2), St. Rita and De La Salle to have a chance to repeat.
In the Romeoville Sectional, Plainfield North, Hinsdale South, Neuqua Valley and Downers Grove South drew the top four seeds.

Class 3A
In the Sycamore Sectional, defending champion Kaneland drew the No. 1 seed in its regional and Prairie Ridge, now in Class 3A, is the top seed in the Marian Central Catholic Regional.
At the Glenbard South Sectional, Nazareth Academy earned the No. 1 seed and Glenbard South is seeded fourth. At Grayslake Central, the hosts, Vernon Hills, St. Viator and Lakes earned the top four seeds.
At the Lincoln-Way West Sectional, Joliet Catholic Academy is seeded second and Lemont third.

Jake Peavy Picks Up Fourth Victory, Is Confident Sox Can Be Contenders

Chicago Sun-Times

By Daryl Van Schouwen

Five weeks into the season, Jake Peavy has a handle on who the White Sox are. He sees a team with enough talent to be a postseason contender, but one that must scratch, claw and cash in on scoring opportunities.

And his fellow pitchers will have to make the big pitch at crunch time.

The Sox (15-17) have lost 11 games by one or two runs, including their last five defeats, and how they fare in close games will probably determine whether they’re in contention for a playoff spot.

“The thing that’s frustrating about this is we’ve been in almost every game to the last pitch,’’ said Peavy, who improved to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.89 with another strong seven-inning start in the Sox’ 8-1 victory Wednesday against the Indians. “We have to find a way to push through, to get a big hit, make a big pitch and make those ballgames wins and not one-run losses.

“Look back over that tough [3-11] stretch. There’s been a guy on third with one out, and we didn’t get it done, and a couple of times where we had to make big pitches to get out of an inning with two outs — myself included. In Detroit [on Friday], if I get Miguel Cabrera, we win that ballgame, hands down. For us to have a chance to win, we can’t afford to beat ourselves and not make those big pitches, not get that guy in from third. We’re not a big powerhouse like Texas or New York that can bang it out and overcome not playing the game fundamentally correct.’’

Healthy for the first time since the Sox traded for him, Peavy was the American League pitcher of the month in April. He called this season the most gratifying of his career.
