Tighter bond conditions for a Glen Ellyn man

Reported by Josh Stockinger, Daily Herald

A DuPage County judge set tighter bond conditions for a Glen Ellyn man Friday after neighbors unnerved by the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., raised concerns about his growing arrest record and unusual behavior.

Christopher Shukin has been arrested 10 times since November 2011 on a variety of charges, from walking around naked to window peeping and grabbing a 4-year-old child he didn’t know.

In court Friday, Judge John Kinsella ordered Shukin fit with a GPS monitoring device while under psychiatric care at a Naperville hospital. Kinsella said he would issue an arrest warrant if Shukin leaves the facility, which he checked into Thursday.

Prosecutors plan to argue at a hearing Monday that Shukin should be taken into custody, in light of his repeated arrests and a community outcry.

West Chicago teachers threatening to strike

Reported by Justin Kmitch, Daily Herald

Teachers in West Chicago Elementary District 33 filed an intent to strike notice Thursday that could have faculty members walking picket lines as early as Jan. 7.

Union leaders said the district’s 284 teachers voted overwhelmingly Wednesday night to authorize the possible job action. The move comes after the school board declared an impasse in contract talks on Dec. 3 following roughly 14 months at the bargaining table.

Suburban voters voiced their opinions

Reported by Melissa Jenco Chicago Tribune

Suburban voters this week not only chose their leaders but voiced their opinions on how much power to give them.

Referendum questions on ballots Tuesday asked voters about measures that included whether elected officials should be allowed to hold more than one office at a time and whether specific communities should have home rule status.

A little more than 90 percent of DuPage County voters and 77.5 percent of Elmhurst voters said officials should not be allowed to hold two or more elected positions simultaneously.

DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin said Wednesday the results send a clear message to those running for office and state lawmakers that it’s a bad idea.
