Bacteria levels high at suburban beaches?

Reported by Jake Griffin, Daily Herald

Bacteria counts were so high in Woods Creek Lake at Indian Trail Beach in Lake in the Hills last year that swimming was banned for eight days.

That’s despite test results that show the beach should have been closed for 10 days.

Due to a lag in the time it takes the state to test water samples, beachgoers may be frolicking in filth. Illinois Department of Public Health officials said it can take as much as two days for test results on water samples with dangerously high bacteria levels to be discovered.

“That’s one of the flaws in the system,” said Melaney Arnold, IDPH spokeswoman.

According to IDPH records, water samples from 150 lake beaches in Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties tested above the closure threshold 253 times in 2012. In most cases, those beaches were open during times when the bacteria levels would have mandated closure. There are no swimming beaches in DuPage County requiring the state to test.

Additionally, since water at most inland lake beaches is tested only twice a month, swimmers may spend days in contaminated water and never know it. Water at Lake Michigan beaches is tested with greater frequency, which partially accounts for a higher rate of contamination, health officials explained.

Hittin’ Em Where It Hurts…

DrewPeterson_1530WCKG

Bollingrbrook is talking about hitting convicted felon Drew Peterson where it hurts…in his wallet.

Turns out, Drewski gets $79,000 per YEAR for doing nothing.  Isn’t that great!

Now in fairness to the murderer, he did serve nearly 30 years as a Bollingbrook police officer and later seargent.  He WAS promised that pension as part of his compensation package, and those funds are vital in supporting his children and family.

We don’t want to set a precedent where retired cops and firefighters are stripped of their earnings.  At the same time, as pointed out during a recent broadcast of Shaun Thompson’s Capitalist Union Radio Show, (Saturdays at 12 Noon on 1530 WCKG) one of the reasons our municipalities and country is going broke is because we’re paying people rediculous salaries long after they’ve ceased to provide value to the entities who are paying them.

Sure, we’d all like to be paid forever, for doing absolutely nothing…but someone has to pay the tab.

The details and full story from the Chicago Tribune can be found here.

Should they yank Drew’s pension if they can?  Comment Below:

Naperville pursues investigation of bar

Reported by Melissa Jenco Chicago Tribune

Liquor commission seeks solutions to late-night violence in city’s downtown, officials say

Naperville is continuing to investigate one of its downtown bars as it tries to curb late-night crime, officials said Thursday.

But some bar owners say they are battling negative perceptions that don’t always match reality.

Police Chief Bob Marshall announced in late October that he would be adding police downtown in the wake of recent late-night violence. Just days later, police arrested four men after a fight that began at BlackFinn American Saloon. One of the men had to be subdued with an electroshock device, police said, and another is accused of battering a DuPage County sheriff’s deputy.
