A heirloom left behind a marble stone on the facade of Rite-Way Automotive in West Chicago will be recovered as part of the downtown’s garden festival and donated to the City Museum.

The memento was placed by the wife of the building’s original owner, Mike Day, in 1951. Current owner Vince Malina’s father had incorporated Rite-Way Automotive in 1971, and when Malina worked with the Historical Preservation Commission this time around, he remembered knowing about the heirloom back when his family closed the property in 1981.

By: Rosemary Mackey
Source: Chicago Tribune

West Chicago, Illinois: May 6, 2013 – The 2013 Click It or Ticket campaign kicks off May 10, 2013 in Illinois. The purpose of the campaign is to help save lives by cracking down on those who do not buckle up through the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The West Chicago Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police (ISP) and over 500 local law enforcement agencies across the state to save more lives by strongly enforcing seat belt laws.

“As we kick-off the busy summer driving season it’s important for everyone to buckle up every trip, every time, day or night – no excuses,” said Sergeant Spencer Kroning. “Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing a seat belt.”

Provisional numbers show that during the 2012 Memorial Day weekend there were six fatalities and almost 600 injuries on Illinois roadways. Three of those fatalities were alcohol-related. Remember – wearing your seat belt is your best defense against an impaired driver.

Tighter bond conditions for a Glen Ellyn man

Reported by Josh Stockinger, Daily Herald

A DuPage County judge set tighter bond conditions for a Glen Ellyn man Friday after neighbors unnerved by the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., raised concerns about his growing arrest record and unusual behavior.

Christopher Shukin has been arrested 10 times since November 2011 on a variety of charges, from walking around naked to window peeping and grabbing a 4-year-old child he didn’t know.

In court Friday, Judge John Kinsella ordered Shukin fit with a GPS monitoring device while under psychiatric care at a Naperville hospital. Kinsella said he would issue an arrest warrant if Shukin leaves the facility, which he checked into Thursday.

Prosecutors plan to argue at a hearing Monday that Shukin should be taken into custody, in light of his repeated arrests and a community outcry.
