Suburban voters voiced their opinions

Suburban voters this week not only chose their leaders but voiced their opinions on how much power to give them.

Referendum questions on ballots Tuesday asked voters about measures that included whether elected officials should be allowed to hold more than one office at a time and whether specific communities should have home rule status.

A little more than 90 percent of DuPage County voters and 77.5 percent of Elmhurst voters said officials should not be allowed to hold two or more elected positions simultaneously.

DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin said Wednesday the results send a clear message to those running for office and state lawmakers that it’s a bad idea.

Cary: 8 arrested in mailed pot bust

A narcotics probe in which someone mailed $13,600 worth of marijuana to a Cary address resulted in eight arrests Friday, police said.

According to police, the package originated in California and was delivered to a home in Cary.

They seized 2,159 grams of marijuana, $1,535 cash and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Beer thief totals 1,800 cases, DuPage authorities say

Talk about a major beer run.

DuPage County authorities on Tuesday charged an ex-con from Melrose Park with stealing more than 1,800 cases.

Thomas Gibbons, 45, is accused in the heist at a McHenry-based Miller distributor. Prosecutors said 22 pallets of brew — and a trailer they were riding in — went missing along with a tractor Sunday or Monday.

Crystal Lake bound Metra train stopped after person fatally struck

As posted in the Chicago Tribune

An outbound Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line train scheduled to end in Crystal Lake this afternoon was stopped after fatally striking a pedestrian, officials said.

Train No. 709, which was to arrive in Crystal Lake at 2:55 p.m., struck the pedestrian at 3:20 p.m., said Metra spokesman Tom Miller.

McHenry County couple accused of burglaries face new charges

A Johnsburg husband and wife already being held in Cook County on burglary charges found themselves in even more hot water Friday, after McHenry County police say they connected them to five burglaries that occurred while the homeowners were attending wakes or funerals.
