Benet senior killed by lightning remembered by friends

Reported By Justin Kmitch, Daily Herald

Family and friends are mourning a Downers Grove teen who was struck and killed by lightning Thursday, just days before she was set to graduate from Benet Academy in Lisle.

The DuPage County coroner’s office said Jennie Dizon, 17, was found unresponsive about 5:20 p.m. Thursday at O’Brien Park along Dunham Road south of 68th Street, in Downers Grove, just a few blocks from her home.

A statement released from the coroner’s office said a preliminary exam indicates Dizon died from “electrocution consistent with a lightning strike.”

Lisle Baseball Sets First-Ever State Finals Trip with Supersectional Win

By Darren McRoy
Source: Lisle Patch

The Lisle High School Lions baseball program booked their program’s first-ever trip to the Illinois 2A state finals—the Final Four of Illinois 2A baseball—with a 5-4 hang-on win against the Beecher Bobcats (15-15) on Monday at Benedictine University.

According to the Suburban Life, the Lions (21-10) made the most of their opportunities and Beecher errors, scoring their five runs on only four hits, while limiting the damage of Beecher’s 11 hits to just the four runs.

Lisle scored two runs in the fifth inning to open up a 5-2 lead, but gave them back unearned in the sixth—leaving it up to Lions southpaw Ryan Van Volkenberg to get the save with a 1-2-3 seventh and send the Lions to states, the Northwest Indiana Times said.

‘Flood journey’ Continues for Those Displaced from Lisle Apartments

By: Marie WIlson
Source: Daily Herald

The “flood journey” that began April 18 for residents across the region still drags on a month later for many who make their home at the Towers at Four Lakes in Lisle.

None of the apartments in the eight-story towers took on water, but the parking decks and lower levels did. Six to eight feet of floodwaters entering those areas caused system failures and power outages that are keeping residents from their homes to this day — and are likely to continue doing so for another four weeks.

Many who live at the towers love their homes and all the perks they offer — free breakfast, movie rentals, summer weekend cookouts, scenic views of hills and lakes — but they say it’s just too much to expect them to wait until June 15 to move back.

“I am choosing to stay at the towers because I love where I live and I just want to go home,” said Debra Schulz, who lives on the eighth floor with her 15-year-old daughter, Haleigh. “But this is such a long period of time just to get back into our homes.”

Towers at Four Lakes management says the delay results from the power outage and the time it takes to special-order proper equipment to fix electrical systems at the roughly 30-year-old buildings. In emails and Facebook posts, Marquette Management of Naperville has updated residents as often as possible on the progress of flood-damage fixes, said Jim Cunningham, executive vice president.

DuPage’s FEMA Flood Disaster Center Opened in Lisle; Assistance Available

By: Darren McRoy
Source: Lemont Patch

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin urges residents affected by the recent flood to apply for federal assistance to help alleviate expenses incurred in the recovery process from the April storms.

“More than 9,000 DuPage County homes and businesses received extensive damage to their properties from the  April flood. In an effort to help relieve some of the financial burden, the federal government is providing grants and low-interest loans to help cover some of the uninsured costs endured by families. I urge residents to apply for these grants and loans as they continue to work with their insurance companies during this recovery process,” said Cronin.

Throughout the past month, DuPage County’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has worked with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

(FEMA) to collect flood damage reports from residents and businesses. The information was then provided to the federal government, resulting in the presidential declaration. The declaration provides financial assistance to flood victims through grants to help with temporary housing, home repairs or replacement and other flood-related expenses. Low interest loans are also available to residents and businesses.

Lisle Flood Victims Get Help at Church Shelter

By: Marie Wilson
Source: Daily Herald

Victor and Ashley Atalla say their only asset is their cars.

Trouble is, their cars were parked at the foot of the ski hill in Lisle’s Four Lakes complex when floodwaters swamped the area April 18.

More than a week later, the two vehicles — a 1991 Nissan 300 ZX and a 1996 Volkswagen Golf GTI the couple had bought just a month before the flood — don’t work.

But instead of totaling their rides, Victor, 23, and Ashley, 22, are fixing them. Step by step. From their temporary home base at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle, where they and about 20 other Lisle residents displaced by flooding are spending their nights and free time in a shelter operated by church volunteers and the American Red Cross.

It’s anything but ideal, and the Atallas, while grateful for a place to prevent them from being on the streets while their apartment remains uninhabitable, say they are frustrated.

“I went from suit and tie every day to homeless,” said Victor Atalla, who is concerned about lacking transportation to a marketing internship he just accepted at a consulting company in Naperville. “This is really affecting our livelihoods.”

Defendant gets 6 years for Lisle beating

Reported by Josh Stockinger, Daily Herard

The last of four men charged in the robbery and severe beating of a Lisle 7-Eleven clerk was sentenced to six years in prison Tuesday after a judge watched a video of the attack and called it “sickening.”

Antwan Jones Jr., 18, of Chicago, admitted striking the 52-year-old victim at least 10 times while his friends ransacked the store for alcohol and cigarettes. Even after the clerk lost consciousness and fell to the floor, Jones — who was wearing a mask — returned and threw more punches, according to security footage played in court.

Tighter bond conditions for a Glen Ellyn man

Reported by Josh Stockinger, Daily Herald

A DuPage County judge set tighter bond conditions for a Glen Ellyn man Friday after neighbors unnerved by the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., raised concerns about his growing arrest record and unusual behavior.

Christopher Shukin has been arrested 10 times since November 2011 on a variety of charges, from walking around naked to window peeping and grabbing a 4-year-old child he didn’t know.

In court Friday, Judge John Kinsella ordered Shukin fit with a GPS monitoring device while under psychiatric care at a Naperville hospital. Kinsella said he would issue an arrest warrant if Shukin leaves the facility, which he checked into Thursday.

Prosecutors plan to argue at a hearing Monday that Shukin should be taken into custody, in light of his repeated arrests and a community outcry.
