Barrington High School Cancels Dance After Threat

A northwest suburban high school cancelled a dance scheduled for Saturday evening after rumors circulated that someone was planning to bring a gun.

A release from Barrington 220 superintendent Dr. Tom Leonard said that conversations among students resulted in the decision to cancel the dance. School officials learned of the rumor that someone would bring a gun to the dance through parents and students Saturday morning.

FBI probes bank robberies in Oak Brook and Buffalo Grove

Authorities are investigating the robbery of a bank in Oak Brook, police said Friday. The robber is also suspected of hitting a Buffalo Grove bank last week, according to the FBI.

The more recent robbery happened about 5 p.m. Thursday at Fifth Third Bank, 1603 West 16th Street in Oak Brook. A man entered the bank, walked around for a bit and then approached a teller demanding money, police said in a news release.

Retired Barrington High School administrator charged with theft

Barrington police Tuesday accused the recently retired chairman of the Barrington High School Fine Arts Department of the theft of approximately $5,022 in theater and raffle ticket revenue from a March musical at the school.

Julie Rachel Salk turned herself in after a warrant was issued in Lake County. She was released after posting $1,000, or 10 percent of her $10,000 bail.

Slippery lanes lead to fatal crash on Elgin-O’Hare

This season’s first snowfall — a rainy, snowy mix — quickly turned to ice Monday evening creating chaos on area roadways and led to one fatal traffic accident overnight.

Authorities said Ratanpara was hit by a vehicle after he exited his car on the expressway. He left his vehicle, authorities said, after he was involved in a crash on the slick roadway.

Dozens of spinouts and accidents led to road closures throughout the area.

Grayslake District 46 set to resume contract talks

Grayslake Elementary District 46 officials and teachers union representatives plan to resume negotiations Monday for a new teachers contract.

Both sides have forwarded final, best offers as required to the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board since District 46 declared an impasse in negotiations last month. The documents show differences between the district and union include pay and contract length.

Barrington school official: 2 eighth-grade boys abused girl on bus

Two eighth-grade boys at Barrington Middle School Prairie Campus are being investigated amid allegations that they sexually abused a third child on a school bus, school officials confirmed today.

Barrington Police Chief Jerry Libit said the boys have been referred to Lake County juvenile court for potential charges of criminal sexual abuse.

Buffalo Grove Theater starts fundraiser to avoid closure

The Buffalo Grove Theater is trying to raise funds to convert to digital projection so that it won’t have to close next year.

It is another local movie theater may well fall victim to what could be dubbed the digital disease unless a fundraiser just getting started provides the cure.

The Buffalo Grove Theater, located at 120 McHenry Road in Buffalo Grove’s Town Center shopping mall, has until April to install digital projection equipment.

Fire ripped through an Elgin liquor store

A fire Tuesday night at 2J’s Wine & Spirits on Elgin’s east side forced the business to close, said Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault. The fire destroyed the roof and half of the walls, he said.

At 11:23 p.m., the Elgin Fire Department responded to a report from a pedestrian that smoke was coming from the roof at 2J’s Wine & Spirits in the 900 block of East Chicago Street.

Outbreak of Salmonella in Cook and Lake county schools

Health officials looking at commercial kitchen in Wheeling

A recent outbreak of salmonella sickened students at five schools in the Chicago suburbs, and health officials have focused their investigation on a commercial kitchen in Wheeling that prepares lunches for the schools.

The children, ages 7 to 14, have recovered, and the outbreak appears to be over, officials said Friday.

The illnesses came to light at a school in southwestern Lake County, where one student became sick Sept. 20 and two others fell ill in the following days. One of those students was hospitalized for four days, but all have recovered, Lake County Health Department epidemiologist Victor Plotkin said.
