Having already put together a solid campaign, the Glenbard North baseball team ended the regular season on a high note with a pair of impressive nonconference wins.

Glenbard North beat York 7-5 on Monday, two days after a 13-3 rout over Downers Grove North.

“Both are good teams,” said Glenbard North coach Rich Smelko, whose team was scheduled to open the playoffs Thursday against South Elgin. “Our hitting picked up which definitely helped.”

Luke Greenberg pitched six innings to record the win against York while Brandon Kressner, Ryan Storto, Brett Consitt and Jeff LaPage all had multiple hits.

Against Downers Grove North, Matt Frawley made his return to the mound after about a two-week absence due to an issue with his arm. The senior worked three innings.

Naperville Central Quarterback to Play for Redbirds

By: Randy Reinhardt

Naperville Central High School junior Jake Kolbe wants to be a teacher.

Already an accomplished quarterback, Kolbe has decided to pursue that area of study and the continuation of his football career at Illinois State.

“He knows Illinois State is very strong in that field,” Naperville Central coach Mike Stine said Thursday. “He likes the direction the program is going. He felt it was the right fit.”

Ranked as a three-star recruit and the No. 52 quarterback in the nation by scout.com for the class of 2014, Kolbe completed 135 of 221 passes for 1,700 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions as a junior for the Redhawks.

Downers Grove North Preaching Steadiness

By: Phil English
Source: Tribune

Chad Isaacson returns to a common theme when discussing the players on his Downers Grove North baseball team — steadiness.

Steadiness is what it takes to survive in the often tough West Suburban Silver. And it helps a team stay toward the top of the conference, even when it’s not playing its best baseball.

“These guys are in the right frame of mind,” Isaacson said. “We went through a little bit of a lull here recently, with losses to Oak Park and Downers Grove South. But these guys know how to dust off and get back to work. They’ve consistently showed resiliency.

“And we’re competing every single day and doing the little things. We’re not always flashy. And to be honest, we’ve had years where guys have had bigger arms, but our guys know you have to play pitch to pitch, inning to inning. And it all goes back to leadership.”

The Trojans were 18-8 overall and 11-5 in the Silver heading into the final week of the regular season. They’ve done it without a significant amount of power hitting or a dominating pitcher.

Badminton State Finals: T.F. South Win Title

By: Steve Reaven
Source: Tribune

There was no shortage of tears among the T.F. South girls badminton contingent in wake of its convincing team state title victory Saturday at Eastern Illinois University.

The unbeaten Rebels began the weekend expecting to take home the school’s first team state championship since a girls bowling crown in 1990.

Realizing their goal proved more emotionally draining than challenging on the court as T.F. South’s 16.5 points were well ahead of runners-up Fremd and Naperville Central (12 points each). Reavis and Downers Grove North tied for fourth with 11 points.

Tears of joy also mixed with sorrow and anguish, however, during the meet’s final hour when both the tandem of Shannon Pollard and Jenna Pasko dropped a three-game decision 21-13, 20-22, 18-21 to Reavis’ Denna Zayed and Marissa Mangala in the doubles final, and junior Jessica Gomez forfeited after suffering a left knee injury during the third-place singles match.

“We won state, so overall I’m happy,” Gomez said. “At first (after being injured), I was sad. But now I see the positive side of it.”

Lyons sophomore Stephanie Lin was shocked after her 16-21, 21-16, 21-17 victory against Hinsdale South senior Emma Adcock in the singles final.

St. Charles North’s Payne Commits to Ball State

By: Mike Helfgot
Source: Tribune

St. Charles North’s Quinten Payne admits the main reason he signed with Loyola in the fall was to play with his older brother.

So when Cully Payne decided not to return to Loyola for what would have been a fifth year of college in March, Loyola agreed to let Quinten out of his letter of intent.

The younger Payne, a 6-foot-4 guard who averaged 19.1 points and shot 41 percent on 3-pointers as a senior, will sign another one in the next few days to attend Ball State.

Aurora Central Overcomes Slow Start

By: Paul Johnson
Source: Sun-Times

First-year Aurora Central Catholic baseball coach Sean Bieterman has stressed all season that this year’s version of the Chargers is a new and improved group.

The Chargers proved it yet again Wednesday with an 8-4 Suburban Christian Conference win over St. Francis, a team that has routinely had ACC’s number in the past.

ACC ace Matt Miller worked through some early errors to pitch another gem and the offense exploded with a six-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. ACC improves to 22-3 overall and 10-2 in the Suburban Christian Gold, tied with Chicago Christian for the top spot.

“This is a different group of guys,” Bieterman said. “That’s a credit to the kids and the assistant coaches for how hard they work and how focused they keep the kids every inning. When you’re winning baseball games, you find a way to keep winning baseball games.”

By: Paul Johnson

When Bartlett first baseman Ben Havel and his teammates emerged from school this afternoon, preparing for a trip to Waubonsie Valley for a key Upstate Eight Valley contest, they noticed something they hadn’t seen all spring.

“Coming out of school at the end of the day, we were like, this is amazing. This is finally baseball weather,” Havel said.

he Hawks were ready for the warm weather, and they showed it time and time again in a convincing 15-6 win over Waubonsie, snapping a three-game losing streak.

Bartlett (12-5 overall, 11-4 UEC) scored at least one run in each of the first six innings, piling up 18 hits all told, and chased Waubonsie star pitcher Troy Fumagalli in the fourth inning after he had already allowed 11 runs.

The win came on the heels of two losses to South Elgin and a loss to Lake Park Monday.

Worried Parents Force Cancellation of Payton-Brooks Baseball Game

By: Mike Clark
Source: Sun-Times

A baseball game between two Chicago public high schools was canceled Saturday when some parents from a North Side school refused to let their children travel to the South Side for the game, saying they were worried about the safety of their kids.

The game between Payton College Prep and Brooks College Prep was supposed to start at 7 p.m. The Payton team had played a makeup game earlier Saturday against Von Steuben and was to head to Roseland on the city’s South Side to play Brooks.

Instead, according to Payton head coach William Wittleder, “About three, four parents [came] up to me saying they’re not letting their kids go down there.”
