Shoes stepping out for summer in Elmhurst for all campers

Elmhurst store distributes shoes for summer camp

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS from My Suburban Life

ELMHURST – Charlie Kern remembers cringing on the first day of cross country practice every year when one of his students arrived wearing high-top basketball shoes or skate sneakers. Now, children registered for his summer running camp in Elmhurst receive a pair of Nike running shoes.

“If they’re going to go through a camp where they’re learning to run properly with good form, we don’t want to just slap a pair of shoes that’s their size on their feet,” said Ashley Wells, who operates Fleet Feet Sports in Elmhurst with her husband, Jason

African-American dorm supervisor.

Myles Burton, 21, of Libertyville was found guilty after a two-hour bench trial before DuPage County Judge George Bakalis.
Prosecutors said Burton was drunk and angry when he carved “KKK” and other words disparaging African-Americans into a stone window ledge in November at Stanger Hall, a campus dormitory.

Vehicles were lined up for blocks on Saturday for Elmhurst College’s annual recycling event, and this year’s haul was a record. Dozens of volunteers, most of them students from Elmhurst College, processed the contents of each car, minivan and truck after guiding them into the correct lines for donation.

Bicycles, wheelchairs, sewing machines, typewriters, vacuum cleaners, household appliances, baby items, batteries, light bulbs, and especially electronics, were dropped off by the carload. A special paper-shredding area, a partnership with DuPage County, also saw steady traffic.

Elmhurst Moves To Expand Its Service To Nontraditional Students

Elmhurst College

By Desiree Chen

Elmhurst College will open a new school this summer, one that will offer innovative and exceptional academic programs for people with busy lives who want a better future.

On Saturday, March 17, the College’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a charter that authorizes the creation of the School for Professional Studies, a new division of the College that will be dedicated to the education of nontraditional students.

The school will offer accelerated undergraduate programs, graduate programs and certificate programs that are aligned with the mission of the College, that meet the needs of employers and, most importantly, that will effectively serve to people who don’t fit the mold of the traditional, 18- to 22-year-old full-time college student.

Because flexibility and innovation will be crucial to serving these students well, the new School will offer on-line and campus-based learning environments, as well as hybrids that blend both approaches. Programs and courses also may be offered in off-campus satellite locations around the Chicago area, or in accelerated semesters, or they may start multiple times a year.

Mike Madigan Examines Policy and Personalities

Elmhurst College News

By John T Slania

Spending cuts are a good first step toward alleviating the state budget crisis but lawmakers need to demonstrate even more fiscal restraint, Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan said at the College’s Governmental Forum.

With Illinois facing a projected $500 million budget deficit, a backlog of $8.5 billion in unpaid bills and $6.8 billion in pension obligations, solutions won’t come easily. “I’m not going to sugar-coat it,” Madigan said. “It’s not going to be a short-term process.”

Madigan, who also is chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois, appeared at the 5th Annual Elmhurst College Governmental Forum at the invitation of his former longtime political rival, Lee Daniels, who now is special assistant to the president for government and community relations at Elmhurst and a distinguished fellow in the College’s Department of Political Science.

The forum on January 24 also featured Lance Pressl, president of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Foundation, who presented new research on the Chicago region’s economic competitiveness.

Although onetime rivals, Daniels and Madigan were able to put aside their differences when it mattered. Madigan, who represents the 22nd District on Chicago’s Southwest Side, is the state’s longest-serving speaker, having held the position for all but two years since 1983. Those were the two years–1995 to 1997–when Daniels served as speaker. Representing the 46th District in DuPage County, Daniels served in the Illinois House from 1975 to 2007, and was the Republican leader from 1983 to 2003.

“When at times we said disparaging things in public, in private, we were able to come together and get the people’s work done,” Daniels said of his relationship with Madigan.

Three Elmhurst College Alumni Receive 2011 Founders Medal

Trib Local Elmhurst

By: lu aiello

Educators William and Joyce Fraccaro and neurologist Richard Nyako are recognized for ‘paying it forward’ through their professional and philanthropic work
Elmhurst College has awarded one of its highest honors to three alumni whose academic lives at Elmhurst prepared them to dedicate their professional lives to helping others.

During the President’s Appreciation Dinner earlier this month, the College awarded the 2011 Founders Medal to lifelong educators Dr. William F. Fraccaro ’70 and Joyce (Ferlazzo) Fraccaro ’70; and to Dr. Richard Nyako ’67, a neurologist who returned to his native Ghana to establish a clinic serving people with limited access to medical care.

One of the highest honors at Elmhurst College, the Founders Medal was established in 1978 to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves through service to the College.

Joyce and William Fraccaro have been actively involved with the College since their first day on campus, which, incidentally, was also the day they met. As Dean of the Faculty Alzada Tipton explained when presenting their awards, the Fraccaros “found each other on the campus they call home” and “have spent their lives helping others and loving their Alma Mater.”

William Fraccaro majored in psychology at Elmhurst, and earned a doctorate in school administration from Vanderbilt University. He went on to serve for three decades as a teacher and administrator specializing in math, science and assessment. Since his retirement in 2004, he has worked as an educational consultant and serves as a guest lecturer and adjunct faculty member at the College. He received the College’s Alumni Merit Award in 2009.

Elmhurst College Asks Applicants About Sexual Orientation

The New York Times

By: Rebecca R. Ruiz

The Common Application may have opted earlier this year not to ask students about their sexual orientation, but Elmhurst College in Illinois has recently announced that it will do so on its admission application.

Elmhurst, a private, Protestant college affiliated with the United Church of Christ — which endorsed gay marriage in 2005 — is believed to be the first college or university in the country to actively solicit an answer to the question of an applicant’s sexuality.

An affirmative answer to Elmhurst’s question, which is optional, may pay dividends: According to The Chicago Sun-Times, those who identify themselves as gay will be eligible for a diversity scholarship totaling up to a third of the cost of tuition.
