Off-duty cop apprehends alleged mailbox vandal in Downers Grove

By Suburban Life Media

Source My Suburban Life

An off-duty police officer was in his garage in the 1500 block of Dickson Avenue around 2:40 a.m. June 9 when he allegedly witnessed two men hitting mailboxes several houses down the block.

When he identified himself as a police officer, the two men fled. One of the two men was later identified as Kevin D. Gordon, the other man was not found, according to police.

Gordon, 19, of 1320 68th Place, Downers Grove, allegedly held a wooden stake in front of the officer in a threatening manner and demanded to see the officer’s badge, which the officer displayed, police said.

According to the police report, Gordon said he could not see the badge, and the officer unholstered his gun, at which point Gordon dropped the stake and continued to run.

Eventually, the officer took Gordon down to the ground and detained him until other officers arrived, police said. There were no physical strikes exchanged between the two, according to the police report. Police did not find the other suspect, described as a white male wearing a Blackhawks cap and jersey.

Downers Grove waitress scratches $4 million lotto ticket after shift at DuPage Inn

By  Ed McMenamin

Source My Suburban Life

When DuPage Inn waitress Connie Licona scratched off her lottery ticket after a shift on Wednesday, she was pretty excited about what she thought was a $4,000 winner.

Then one of her coworkers took a second look at the $20 ticket.

“She said, ‘Connie you gotta sit down for a minute,’” Licona recalled on Friday. “She said, ‘You won $4 million.’

“I almost fell. I couldn’t believe it.”

The Glen Ellyn resident took the $4 million winner to her brother’s house in Lombard to celebrate that evening, and called off for her next shift on Friday. But she said on Monday she’ll be back at the bar and restaurant to work with her friends.

“So many people called me asking, ‘Are you quitting, are you quitting?’” she said. “No, I’m not quittin’.”

The 51-year-old opted to take a one-time pay out of $1.68 million instead of an annual payment of $140,000. She said that will allow her to help out her four children, her siblings and her mom more quickly.

“It hasn’t even sunk in yet,” she said. “I think it’ll sink in when I see that check.”

Town homes proposed for Downers Grove neighborhood

By Dawn Rhodes

Source Chicago Tribune

A proposal to build 14 town homes in a Downers Grove development near the Darien border passed the committee stage on Monday night and will now go to the Village Council for final approval.

The village’s Plan Commission unanimously approved the request from an Oak Brook land owner to build the town homes on a vacant parcel within the Fairmount Village II development at 950 75th Street. The 13-acre development surrounding the parcel is currently filled with other town homes, while single-family homes sit to the west.

The owner is seeking to build two, seven-unit buildings. The two-story town homes would each be about 2,100 square feet with a two-car garage and a driveway.

The two buildings would face each other, split down the middle by a private street called Ducat Place. Stockley Road, a small street to the south, would be extended nearly 200 feet west to provide the main access to Ducat Place. The extension will also provide turnaround space for emergency vehicles needing to reach Ducat Place, village officials said.

Ten of the units will have three bedrooms and the four units on the ends will have four bedrooms.

The Fairmount Village II development was approved in 1984. The terms allowed for the creation of three separate lots. Two lots were filled with 138 town homes. The now-vacant lot was occupied by a single-family home for many years until it was destroyed by a fire in 2009, village officials said.

“A single-family home here doesn’t make a lot of sense,” said developer Richard Vane, noting the retail development across 75th Street in Darien. “I think that you’ll see that it’s a nice transition from the existing town homes, our town homes and the single-family homes. I think that this will be a good addition to the village.”

Benet senior killed by lightning remembered by friends

Reported By Justin Kmitch, Daily Herald

Family and friends are mourning a Downers Grove teen who was struck and killed by lightning Thursday, just days before she was set to graduate from Benet Academy in Lisle.

The DuPage County coroner’s office said Jennie Dizon, 17, was found unresponsive about 5:20 p.m. Thursday at O’Brien Park along Dunham Road south of 68th Street, in Downers Grove, just a few blocks from her home.

A statement released from the coroner’s office said a preliminary exam indicates Dizon died from “electrocution consistent with a lightning strike.”

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will move forward with security upgrades this summer at its two middle schools and 11 elementary schools.

During its May 13 meeting, the District 58 Board of Education awarded the bid and Alternate 1 for phase one security enhancements at all District 58 buildings. The work will take place this summer, for a total cost of $132,970.

“The safety and welfare of our students continues to be our No. 1 priority,” said Superintendent Kari Cremascoli. “Numerous measures have long been in place in District 58 to ensure students are educated in safe, nurturing environments, and these enhancements focus on both student safety and a welcoming school environment.”

Top vote-getters sworn in despite legal glitch

By Dawn Rhodes

Source Chicago Tribune

Mary Ellen Young, Danielle Dittus and Paula Bowling took oaths of office for the DuPage County Regional Board of School Trustees Monday, but that doesn’t mean all of them will be allowed to serve. Though the three received the most votes, the Illinois School code prohibits Young and Dittus from serving side-by-side because both represent Downers Grove Township.

The board was obligated by state statute to swear in its newly elected members on Monday, though no local, county or state agency seems to have authority to resolve the issue created by the results of the April 9 election.

“We had certificates in hand, we swore in each of them,” said Laura Pollastrini, who was elected as president of the reorganized board. “Only time will tell.”

The stalemate emerged last month after Young and Bowling, of York Township, beat Christopher Jacks of Naperville Township for the two, full six-year terms. Then Dittus beat Jerry Allen of Milton Township for the unexpired four-year term.

“I think this had to happen before there could be a next step,” Regional Superintendent Darlene Ruscitti, ex-officio secretary to the board, said of the move to swear in the elected members. “It’s shining a light on where there are some gaps in the process.”

Frustration grows with construction company on residential lot in Downers Grove

By Ed Mcmenamin

Source My Suburban  Life

Despite years of code violations and complaints, residents say a construction company based on a residential street has not reformed its behavior and serves as a general nuisance in an otherwise quiet area.

The complaints over Donegal Excavating, 4240 Lacey Road, started soon after the business opened in 2008 and resurfaced publicly again this month when developers proposed building an assisted-living facility in a wooded lot next door.

About two-dozen residents at a town hall meeting hosted by developers of the assisted-living facility spent most of the meeting’s two hours venting frustration about the dump trucks, semitrailers and construction equipment they say comes and goes from Donegal beginning early in the morning and ending late at night, among a myriad of other issues.

“They drive in and out throughout the day, so it’s extremely loud,” neighbor Nick Janowitz said. “They have a backhoe that lifts gravel; there’s dust. The biggest thing about it is, it’s a safety concern. It’s a quiet neighborhood, and my kid can’t ride her bike on the street.”
